I was told by a Japanese resident that in many cases, except for apartments, the houses are torn down unless a relative of the deceased is moving into the house. Even so in many cases even the relative will tear down the house and build another one.

The “Lonely Death Squad” of Japan cleans out the houses of people who have died alone without anyone noticing their deaths for long periods of time. It is probably the most depressing job anyone could ever do.
