Those pieces are parts of the balloon that explode after reaching a certain height.
That happens because the higher it goes the less pressure it has making the gas inside expands exploding the balloon.

thank you. what is the smaller balloon and the box for? ballast, and a way to make a smoother re-entry perhaps?
also it's hard to believe that traveling that high, wind wouldn't set it down very far from the launch point. that's what particularly amazes me.
