Miso Soup isn’t an appetizer
If you’ve ever had Miso soup, you most likely enjoyed it before your meal. But, in actuality Miso soup is to be consumed after the meal and it’s even perfectly acceptable to drink it right from the bowl.

unless you're in japan and trying to impress someone, i wouldn't worry about any of the etiquette. experiment and eat it however you like.
mixing a little of the wasabi in to the soy sauce makes for a great dipping sauce that won't blow out your nostrils.
