The union cutting was probably the most cumbersome way I have seen so far!

Cut the tip off.
Put the now flat/cut tip side down and cut the onion in half through the root.
Remove the outer layer/skin.
Continue as on the video by not cutting all the way through.
Then just throw away the last piece, which will be the root.
