Valyrian steel is exceptionally precious in Westeros. There are only a smattering of swords scattered around the Seven Kingdoms — including the Tarly sword Heartsbane — and houses take great pride in owning one.

We also know Lord Tarly does not think much of Sam. He knew his son was headed to Oldtown to become a maester, so is he going to come after his son or have someone else do it to take back the sword?
