His former girlfriend, whom he still loved, has given him an ultimatum, that they can be together again on one condition – he gets rid of his cat. The cat, Hobbles, was and still is, his best friend since childhood. So, looks like the girlfriend is not returning any time soon.

He and his former girlfriend split up because of religious differences, but they still had feelings for each other, so the girl reached out to him one day...
"She called me and said that if we got back together, I'd have to get rid of my cat."
He knew right away that that was not an option.
"This is my cat, Hobbes. I'm 33 years-old, and Hobbes is the closest thing I have to a kid," he said.
"I love my kitty cat, and I'm never 'getting rid' of him," he said.
"I now have no desire to get back with my ex. End of story."
