It is unlikely, however, that these lists actually originated in the Middle Ages since the world "medieval" wasn't invented until the Enlightenment, and the concept of the Middle Ages didn't become popular until the 16th century. Most of the "medieval" lists are assumed to come from 19th and 20th century writers.
