The old Hollywood sign read, “Hollywoodland” until 1949 when they decided to preserve the sign and take the last four letters down. In 1973, it was declared a historical monument and was replaced in 1978 after a celebrity fundraiser. The old sign was purchased on eBay for $450,400.
