The original Ghostbusters was one of the first comedies that used visual effects. John DeCuir, who was responsible for the production design of the movie, was previously nominated for an Oscar 11 times, so he took the work very seriously. He designed several foam core mockups for the film, including the models of several buildings and a life-size Marshmallow Man.
