Some Midwestern Foods Are Just Too Weird For Everyone Else (10 pics + 1 gif)

1

AMBROSIA “SALAD”

It’s a mixture of canned pineapple, maraschino cherries, mini marshmallows, and whichever other fruits your family loves, all bound together by a whipped topping (probably cool whip). It shouldn’t, but definitely counts as the healthy part of any family’s Easter dinner because, ya know, fruit.

2

HORSESHOE SANDWICH

Despite its name, this is so much more than a sandwich. It’s toasted bread topped with a beef patty (sometimes more than one), French fries, and cheese sauce.

3

PUPPPY CHOW

It’s cereal smothered in melted peanut butter and chocolate tossed in as much powdered sugar as physically possible. I’m also not completely convinced there isn’t cocaine as well because it’s addictive as hell.

4

CINCINNATI CHILI

No, this is not a bolognese or bean chili. It’s seasoned ground beef served over spaghetti with shredded cheese, diced onions, and oyster crackers, and it’s so good you’ll almost wanna move to Cincinnati. Just kidding.

5

DEEP-DISH PIZZA

Deep-dish pizza is in a league of its own. Technically, it’s more of a savory pie with a deep crust topped with sauce, sausage, and cheese. Then more sauce.

6

GOULASH

It may not look (or sound) that appetizing, but damn is it tasty: a rustic stew of ground meat and veggies served over pasta (aka Hamburger Helper or pasta hotdish).

7

TOASTED RAVIOLI

In case you haven’t had the pleasure of eating them, they’re breaded and fried raviolis served with marinara sauce, of course.

8

FRIED CHEESE CURDS

Breaded and fried “squeaky” cheese curds served with dipping sauce. They are NOT like mozzarella sticks, so do not expect the cheese to pull apart since it’s not melted.

9

SCOTCHEROOS

They’re made with Rice Krispies, butterscotch, peanut butter, and topped with chocolate. Every Midwest mom is dying to take these bad boys to their next potluck.

10

HOTDISH

A casserole made with ground meat, canned soup (usually cream of chicken), canned or frozen vegetables, and a starch (but if you’re smart you’ll surely choose tater tots).
