How would anyone know that a nebula 7,000 light years away was destroyed 6,000 years ago? As you say, the light from such an event wouldn't reach us for another 1,000 years. As nothing can travel faster than light, no possible signal or information from such an event could have reached the Earth yet. So how do you know?
