In 1955, merchant vessel Joyita disappeared in the South Pacific. The boat was eventually discovered in bad shape but still afloat. However, all 25 passengers had vanished without a trace and were never found.

Kentucky meat shower

While it sounds like a horrifying sex act, the ‘Kentucky meat shower’ actually refers to a time meat rained from the sky. In 1876, bits of red meat fell from the sky in Bath County, Kentucky for several minutes. Scientists concluded that the meat was lung tissue, muscle, and cartilage from either a horse or a human infant. The most widely accepted theory is that buzzards threw up the meat while flying over the area.

Bermeja island vanished

Bermeja is a phantom island off the northern coast of the Yucatán that was found on maps up until the 20th century. All the maps up to this point were pretty accurate, so searches for the island were conducted but nothing was ever found. Researchers are unsure if the island ever existed or not.

2,000 year-old-body intact

The tomb of Xin Zhui, a royal of ancient China, was found in 1971. When the tomb was opened, it was discovered her body was well preserved. Her organs and blood vessels were intact, she had some blood in her veins, and still had hair. Xin Zhui’s body was soaked in a mysterious liquid that still baffles scientists.

Koko the gorilla on death

Koko was a gorilla famous for her ability to communicate with humans through sign language. When asked “where do animals go to die?” Koko signed “a comfortable hole.” This led to philosophical debates regarding what animals think/know about death. If Koko was able to elaborate, us humans could’ve learned more.

Dancing plague

In July of 1518, a case of ‘dancing plague’ broke out in Strasbourg, Alsace. Around 400 people were affected and madly danced in the streets for days without rest. The mania went on for a month, with many people collapsing and a few who died. Historians and doctors can’t explain why this happened, but it’s thought to have been a mass psychogenic illness.

Vanished Prime Minister

Harold Edward Holt served as Prime Minister until the day he was swept out to sea while swimming at the remote Cheviot Beach. Friends of Holt witnessed the tragedy, so it was concluded that the prime minister drowned. His death sparked one of the biggest search operations in Australian history, but his body was never found. This was not only very strange, but also led to many conspiracy theories about what happened to him.

Head trauma creates musical genius

In 2006, Derek Amato suffered a severe concussion after hitting his head diving in a pool. Amato suffered some memory loss but gained amazing musical talent and became a composer. Acquired musical savant syndrome is known to doctors, but not as strong and unique as Amato’s.

Oak Island money pit

The ‘mystery of Oak Island’ dates back hundreds of years and revolves around the Nova Scotia island that is believed to contain buried treasure. Early explorers dug the original shaft known as ‘the money pit’, and it has continually been excavated since. Some historical artifacts have been found, but people are still in search of the treasure.

Longest possible alien signal

In 1977, Ohio State University’s Big Ear Radio telescope was used to support the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence. Astronomer Jerry R. Ehman discovered an unusual 72-second signal that hasn’t been repeated since. The ‘wow’ signal remains the strongest candidate for alien contact ever detected.

Hector the thundercloud

From the months of September to March, a thundercloud forms almost every day on the Tiwi Islands in Australia. Nicknamed ‘Hector’, it is one of the most consistent thunderstorms on the planet. Meteorologists don’t have a valid explanation of why this happens.

Mysterious manuscript

The Vonich manuscript is a 272-page text hand-written in an unknown language. It has been carbon dated back to the early 15th century, but cryptographers and codebreakers have not been able to translate it. Nobody knows what it says, and its meaning remains a mystery.

Cleopatra’s tomb

Despite many attempts to find it, the location of Cleopatra’s tomb is still a mystery. It’s believed that she is buried with her love Antony, but the famous historical figure has yet to be discovered.

Phaistos Disc

The clay disk dates back to the Minoan Bronze Age and is covered on both sides with a spiral of stamped symbols. The purpose and meaning of the Phaistos Disc are unknown, making it one of the most famous mysteries of archaeology.

Vanished village

A small Inuit village in Canada mysteriously disappeared in 1930. Fur trappers passing through the area knew the village well, but when trapper Joe Labelle stopped in, everything had vanished. A search was conducted for the missing people, but all that was found was a manmade grave with 7 sled dogs.
