#1 is totally utterly b@#$$%t. By adding the screw you are introducing inaccuracies, not to mention that if you are measuring trimmings or pre-painted material you will ruin it. Yes, it is handy if you need to measure from a crew or nail, but any good tape measure has tiny spikes on the lip that grips when you measure.

The person who started these false "correct ways of doing things" is an absolute d@#$$%s.
Chinese takeout containers unfold into paper plates.
It can be a nightmare to try and eat Chinese food out of those takeout containers, but they are built like that for efficiency. To both ensure that the quantity of the food they place in there is accurate and so that the person eating them can unfold them into a plate later.
