Eric Cartman is a nasty little kid whose name was inspired by Matt Karpman, a high school classmate of the creators of the show. His personality was based on patriarch Archie Bunker from All in the Family, a favorite show of the creators. Basically, Cartman is what they thought Archie Bunker would have been like as a child.
