Some lipstick does contain “pearl essence” or “pearlescence,” a silvery substance found in fish scales. Primarily sourced from herring, it can be found in many lipsticks, nail polishes, and other cosmetic products. But most cosmetics now contain a synthetic version of pearl essence.
