This story is so full of straight up a##hole, so coated in flagrant d@#$hebaggery, that my immediate reaction is that it’s fake. There’s just no way someone could be so oblivious to their own sh@#tiness. But the way she tries to justify her actions by saying she can only take an exotic vacation with her family once per year makes me think it’s legitimate — “I know your mom died, but we can only go to a tropical island together, like, once per year :(” Ugh. I just… I hate this person so much and I don’t even know her.

And don’t worry, not a soul in the comments answered anything other than a resounding YTA (You’re The A##hole). Here are some of the best responses:

When my mother died, I was in almost exactly the same situation, so I'm speaking from first-hand experience.

The GF went above and beyond the call to help him get set up to go. She was there in every way she could be - from logistical help to emotional support. She did so much to get him ready for his trip that she basically *mothered* him. To insist that she go was unreasonable. As a grown man, I can say that after all she did, if he still needed her to hold his hand, he needs some help. If my girlfriend did all that for me, I would give her my blessing to make the decision she made.

Plus, in these days of facetime etc, she could still continue to support him through the entire process. How physically close does he need her to be? The more I read about it, the more I'm convinced he is emotionally needier than am adult should be.

Family First - you can always get another boyfriend, but you can't get another family.

It was good that it happened. So the boyfriend can see her level of commitment to their relationship. By history, she will always give priority to her family or something else and not to their relationship. So it's better that he finds someone more committed to the relationship than trying to build something with someone who will necessarily betray his trust at some point.
