D in "D-Day" stands for "Débarquement", in French.

"D" is just a reference point to/from which the time was counted eg. D+1
There is no mention whatsoever in the documents that D was a short from certain word, people started adding their own meaning to this after war.
There was also a letter H used with D eg. D+2 H+15 meant 15th hour of 3rd day from invasion
