In the '70s there were television commercials/PSAs with a sign-language interpretation in a little window in the corner - for long-distance phone service.

Long Distance commercials. For the deaf.

Speech to text services has existed for a long time. ;-) The deaf call a service from their text phone and they call the other party on a regular phone. A person then reads the deaf persons text loud, and types the other end of the conversation.
