The "Baby Boom" was the bulge in population caused by returning WWII servicemen starting families. WWII ended in Europe in 5/45, and in the Pacific in 8/45. Human babies require a gestation period of 9 months, therefore the earliest Baby Boomers were born in February of 1946.
Those born during WWII are properly characterized as "War Babies;" we never felt the need to award ourselves a generational name like the Boomers did.
