A first edition 16th printing looks exactly like this picture, and sells for around $200 retail without autograph. Still a nice find, but the printing number makes a big difference.
Thinking it through, the earliest editions would not have the round "Pulitzer Prize Novel" on the front, because it hadn't won yet. That was added to later printings, which were still "first editions."
There were only 5,000 first edition, first printing copies sold. Many, possibly even most, went to libraries.
