#4 im pretty sure its for the wind currents.... (thats why its round in the middle).
also it doesnt make sense to build empty floors to make it higher....having an apartments there would be even more profitable.

#17 If you used this for heating a closed space you'd probably only do it once unless you were somehow immune to the effects of carbon monoxide.
