The health and safety of our staff and patients is our highest priority. Beginning as early as March 25th, every UPHS staff member entering a clinical site will receive a surgical mask for use throughout the work day. Masks must be worn at all times.
Due to the national shortage of personal protective equipment, the mask should be re-used over several days unless soiled or damaged. Upon completion of a shift, the mask should be stored in a plastic bag for re-use on subsequent days and stored on-site at work. Department-level supplies will remain available for replacements during shifts when needed. Additional details on the processes and procedures for exchanging masks will be communicated at each entity.
Frequent hand-washing and use of hand sanitizer, and taking care not to touch your face remain the most effective measures to prevent transmission of the virus. A New Yorker article by surgeon and public health researcher Atul Gawande details how measures like these have helped to slow the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic in Hong Kong and Singapore, in conjunction with the same types of social distancing steps being employed now across the United States.
We are continuously evaluating and adapting our procedures for the use of personal protective equipment to maintain good stewardship of limited supplies of masks and other equipment. Like hospitals and health systems across the nation, Penn Medicine faces supply chain challenges to ensure the continued safety of our staff as they work to care for patients during the COVID-19 outbreak. We are sparing no expense and turning over every lead to secure as much inventory as we can to protect you.
