Steve McQueen developed mesothelioma and contributes his ailment to his days in the marines when he scraped/removed huge amounts of asbestos insulation from ship pipes and breathed it in. It’s only dangerous if ingested or breathed in and that exposure came long before he was on movie sets.

Silent film star Harold Lloyd was doing a shoot for Haunted Spooks when a prop bomb (which turned out to be a real bomb) went off. Lloyd lost two fingers on his right hand and was blinded for several months.
