Not just India. The swastika/sauwastika is symbol that's been part many cultures including Native Americans, Baltic peoples, ancient Egyptians and Greeks among others and always seemingly having a positive mystical connotation often related to the sun, lightning or the forces and harmonies of nature, etc.

Caswell,

The swastika was used by Christians- especially Catholics. A church in St. Cloud, MN a predominantly German community, was completed in 1931. It had several stone swastikas on it's facade.

In 1935 the German flag was officially changed to the off center swastika and became known throughout the world as the symbol of Nazism and the Holocaust.

I believe the church removed the stone swastikas just a few years ago.
