My understanding is that it was a much fouler time, and everything was done in the open and messes were left where they fell. A couple gallons of beer were permitted to ladys of the court and prior to purity laws, henbane was often used in place of hops. They'd have burnt us all like heretics I am sure.
For some reason, cemeteries were very popular places to party in the Middle Ages. events like elections, public trials, theatrical groups, and even sex workers could be found at the local cemetery.
