My understanding is that it was a much fouler time, and everything was done in the open and messes were left where they fell. A couple gallons of beer were permitted to ladys of the court and prior to purity laws, henbane was often used in place of hops. They'd have burnt us all like heretics I am sure.
The Middles Ages were a curious time for Germans, who were able to resolve spousal disputes via combat. That’s right, married couples could fight in a ring to legally settle disputes.
