My understanding is that it was a much fouler time, and everything was done in the open and messes were left where they fell. A couple gallons of beer were permitted to ladys of the court and prior to purity laws, henbane was often used in place of hops. They'd have burnt us all like heretics I am sure.
Women in the Middle Ages saw their foreheads as their central feature. So, in an attempt to accentuate this, they often plucked their eye brows off, their eyelashes off, and shaved their hairlines back.
