I once illustrated a childrens book for a guy my sister knew. I was just 18 so I didn't think of any up front costs, but after reading the thick novel (barely skimmed actually), I came up with twelve illustrations ovet several months. Guy promised to pay me a percentage of sales. He got it published but ghosted me and moved to the phillipines.
