Tipping in Japan is considered rude.
In fact the whole concept of tipping isn't that big of a deal outside of you-know-where... but it's an easy way to spot clueless tourists.

#1 Are bike thefts a problem in some places in Japan? I've only been there once, but I don't recall ever seeing a locked bike on the street in any of the areas I visited.
