Rosalyn, I'm afraid Eunice is technically correct. It's a matter of semantics, but the comment is accurate. So...

#13 Rome is at approximately the same latitude as Chicago. Hard to imagine.

#17 Chicago is farther east than Memphis.

Hugh,

Norwegians have problems seeing this the other way.
They don't understand how much further south than us most of the US is.
I live at 59.28N, so a bit south of anchorage compared to the rest of the US.
The south of Norway is way closer to me compared to the north.
Thank god we have the "gulf stream" bringing heat up to us.... then circle around Greenland before giving the east of the US cold water :P
Living on the coast, we could have 50F any day of the year. Pretty sure Anchorage does not stay at 50F in the winter :)

The one that blew my mind when I first heard it was that Las Vegas is farther west than Los Angeles. When I lived in LA, I thought I was heading east when I went to Vegas, but I was actually going northwest.

"It’s easy to forget how recent some of our research and discoveries are.

Though the idea of “continental drift” was first proposed in 1915, the theory of plate tectonics wasn’t really well developed until the 1950s, continuing into the 1970s. And while we currently understand pretty well that an asteroid impact caused most dinosaurs to rapidly go extinct, down to the exact location of the crater and the size of the asteroid and everything, the asteroid-impact theory wasn’t proposed until 1980."
