#12- Richard Bong was a United States Army Air Forces major and Medal of Honor recipient in World War II. He was one of the most decorated American fighter pilots and the country's top flying ace in the war, credited with shooting down 40 Japanese aircraft, all with the Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter.

40 CONFIRMED Japanese aircraft shot down. He claimed more, but not all were confirmed by witnesses or gun cameras.
Not to mention a few destroyed on the ground.
There's a bridge named in his honor between his hometown of Superior, Wisconsin and Duluth, Minnesota. It's interesting to note that the central suspension portion of the bridge is made of Japanese steel.
