I know having a lot of kids was common before, but one of the reasons were that you needed the extra hands on the farm, and a lot of children didn't actually grow up, but died while they were very young.
In Europe nearly every country it was permitted to kill your children until the age of 6. It changed at the beginning of the industrial revolution, around 1870.
