Gavin De Becker's book, The Gift Of Fear addresses all the scenarios above in handling them with your instincts. Many of the examples here I swear are straight out of the book. Very helpful suggestions to say the least. One that personally saved me was throwing my car keys in one direction and running away in the opposite direction when approached in a garage late at night. Carrying mace/pepper spray on a separate keychain is always a great thing to have in another pocket.

Imagine a world where you wouldn't have to think about this at all.

To appear confident is the most crucial bit. Always. Everywhere. If that doesn't help, being able to run like hell is the next skill to have. Especially if you are outnumbered.

You cannot appear capable if you are not capable. So become capable. Exercise and study a useful martial art that teaches punching, kicking, and grappling. Do not take weapons study seriously. Unless the weapon is a firearm.

"Don’t fumble through your pockets.

If you think your being followed go into a store calmly and chat with the workers.

Carry a loose dollar bill or two if your someone that likes to give money to people. Less likely to target the dude that handed a single dollar than the guy who pulled a dollar out of a wallet full of 20’s"
