I'm more inclined to believe this handwriting is that of an older woman, perhaps widowed. The handwriting and daily routines remind me so much of my great aunt whose letters contained her dailies. Her days were much slower after her children had grown and were busy raising their own. She filled it by the mundane tasks of little jobs around her house, letter writing her friends (instead of phoning since long distance calls were sooooo expensive) and doing her shopping. The '50's housewife was much busier than this example, and by no means boring.

The diary serves as an insight into what life was like back in 1957. It often refers to very 1950s names like Winnie, Jinks, and Garland. One entry details Nellie’s trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico, saying how a coffee and a pie cost 31 cents, and how supper cost 55 cents, which is $2.90 and $5.15 today respectively.
