Here in Texas and other border states we have a cactus named prickly pear. the fruit of this cactus is called a tuna...don't know why. Because of this we may say tunafish as opposed to just tuna.

#1 Math is an abbreviation. As Mathematics starts with math, so, math.
#11 Block is the distance from a corner to the next corner, they're used as a distance reference. It does not have to be that hard. Poor thing.

Gas... as short for Gasoline, while others use Petrol... since the fuel contains benzene, it's named benzine, benzina, bensin and so on or nafta from naphta.
Seems like a lot of the questions come from people speaking other languages, and not remembering all the dumb stuff people say in their own language, and not figuring out there are proverbs that don't really translate directly.
