#2 - there are appliances today that will last indefinitely and are repairable with more or less standardised parts. But they also cost an order of magnitude more (roughly price range of said appliance from the 70s in today's money). Things break because the consumers, aware or not, want things that are mainly Cheap and only hope that those will last.
