I have never gotten the reason behind these events. I've got my diploma given by the profs secratary and that was it.

Onicyphorous, it is to celebrate and achievement, closing a chapter in a persons life, or starting a new chapter if you will, which more people should do. It is also OK to not celebrate if that is your cup of tea. :-)

Yeah, you're right. I still am quite a bit confused why they celebrate with a doctors outfit. In Germany you will get ithis sort of cloak and hat handed when you defended your phd thesis with success..
