The dutch Veld(t) translates to field. I presume they ment vilt, which translates to felt, and was commonly used for small childrens shoes..

#1 That seems pretty large for an under the sheets warmer. All the ones I've seen have been pan sized or smaller. Perhaps used at the foot of the bed to warm feet still awfully smelly/sooty.
