The dutch Veld(t) translates to field. I presume they ment vilt, which translates to felt, and was commonly used for small childrens shoes..

Bed warmer: Burning coals, smelly, burny bad idea. They'd use stones or beans to store heat.

#1 That seems pretty large for an under the sheets warmer. All the ones I've seen have been pan sized or smaller. Perhaps used at the foot of the bed to warm feet still awfully smelly/sooty.

I agree. Bed warmers are usually flat. With that size pot, I'm thinking it may be a humidifier.
