"We didn’t know how mountains formed until 1966. And not just mountains, earthquakes and volcanoes too. Like we were putting men into space and yet every time there was an earthquake, we were just like “What the hell is going on?”"

"Most women in America couldn’t open a credit card until 1974. But if you think that’s bad, women didn’t get the right to vote in Switzerland until 1991."

"It took us until 2002 to confirm what was at the center of the Milky Way. We are rotating around a supermassive black hole, but we didn’t know that until after Britney Spears had released her first album."

"We didn’t (fully) sequence the human genome until four months ago. We had not mapped one human’s full DNA until May 2021. The Human Genome Project which completed in 2003? Yeah, they were missing 15% of DNA base pairs. Very bold of them to call that complete. That’s like a frat guy in a group project’s version of complete."

"The Heimlich maneuver wasn’t invented until 1974. I mean, this was so recent that Dr. Heimlich was alive until 2016. He could have played Minecraft."

"America’s first seatbelt laws were only in 1984 and New Hampshire still doesn’t even have them."

"Smoking wasn’t banned on all US flights until the year 2000 and pilots were actually exempt. They can still legally smoke on airplanes today."

"We didn’t know why the ocean was salty until 1979. We were just like: “Yup, whole planet’s covered in this stuff. No idea where it comes from.”"

"We didn’t know that a meteor killed the dinosaurs until 1991. That’s the same year that Home Alone came out."

"We didn’t have wheeled luggage until 1970. Which means that astronauts that went to the moon had to carry their own suitcases."

"We didn’t know that babies could feel pain until 1987. When Back to the Future came out, we were not using anesthesia on babies."

"We didn’t know how anesthesia worked until 2020. We were just ragdolling people into unconsciousness with no idea how it actually worked."

Science today will give anybody the result they want, if you pay them to study it.

Raymond,

That's not right. Stick to the well known journals and you'll find good, peer reviewed science. Stay away from fishy sources. It's that easy.

Daphne, Well, the first well known journal that comes to mind is The Lancet that has been spouting garbage for 30 years.

#6 - Live Free or Die! Joking aside, this is actually the fault of the US Gov't trying to force states to comply with illegal federal regulations. Back in the 80s, they tried to tie highway funding to seat belt laws and interstate speed limits. NH chose the speed limit option. It's the same reason why there wasn't (still isn't?) a helmet law in NH for motorcycles.

Leanne,

Illinois, Iowa and NH still do not have helmet laws for motorcycles.

Leanne,
Curious as to why the down votes? This is a factually correct comment. SCoTUS ruled the federal regulation limiting speed limits was unconstitutional, so Congress added additional powers to the Transportation Department with discretion on disbursing funds. The DoT gave 2 choices to states - keep the speed limit at 55mph or pass a state seat belt law. Since most states wanted to raise the limit to 65mph, they passed the seat belt law. NH has a very short interstate system. I-495 is maybe 40 miles between MA and ME, and there was very little traffic north of Concord on I-93. So they said no to the seat belt law figuring a 55mph limit on those stretches of road was not such a bad trade off.

Lot's of bullsh#t here, e.g. the right for women to vote in Switzerland was introduced 1971 (20y earlier, but still quite late...)

Vincent,

I have to apologize: I did some additional research and there was one region in Switzerland, that introduced this right in 1991. So this is not completely false, but also not completely right.

#2 That's nit right. Only women of the the Canton of Appenzell weren't allowed to vote due to regional law.

Irene,

In 1991 following a decision by the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland, Appenzell Innerrhoden became the last Swiss canton to grant women the vote on local issues; AI is the smallest Swiss canton with c. 14,100 inhabitants in 1990. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women's_suffrage_in_Switzerland
