In my company you are not allowed to work longer than 10h unless your boss gets a special permit for emergencies. And if you work more than 12h, you are not allowed to drive home but the company will pay a taxi. And another taxi the next morning.

Also overtime is always paid.

Tim, I'm on the side of not overworking employees, but I've made tons of extra income from overtime (US pays double or +50% for overtime). And this one guy at my first real job made so much with overtime in 1 year that he was able to buy a ski lodge in Tahoe and retired there at ~45 yrs old. Overtime should be voluntary, though.
