There is no such thing as "clean code", there is only "somewhat cleaner code"
What about mm dd yy?
As that's just limited to one locale/region. Always store a date as YYYYMMDD and then display it in whatever your local date format is - then your code will work globally. By storing in that YYYYMMDD it is then easy to sort and display in forward or reverse date order too
