There are tombs nearby that are thought to be dug for the workers. If I died and was buried at work, I'd consider myself a slave

Even though the Egyptians did have slaves, they probably were not used at all when building the pyramids. Archeological evidence shows most were free, paid laborers. And they were paid pretty decently.
Of course it was still backbreaking work. But no slaves.
Plus basically every ruler in ancient times was dictatorial in some degree.
