#1 They are. Civil Engineer here. Whilst a 'normal' bulding has a calculated bearing load of 200-400kg/m² (depends on the use) of each storey a library has about 1.500kg/m². They are topped by tank depots and bunkers.

Rox,

I remember reading of a university library in the US where they actually forgot to account for the weight of the books and the building started to sink from all the weight. Not sure how true that story is.
