They told students for years "go to college, you need to have a degree to succeed". Now we have tons of people with huge debt and no real useful skills other than maybe some letters after their names and a fancy piece of paper and no skilled trade workers.

Lexi,

Yes, but the intent was to major in a subject that would lead to a job. I'm 64 and it was true then as it is now that many liberal arts majors are so full that it's difficult if not impossible to use your degree. How many history, english, and social studies graduates do you need? When I went to orientation one of the speakers told us that most year groups are 20% engineering and 80% liberal arts with the majority of the LA either pre-med or pre-law. After the freshman year the non-competitive students are looking for another major. A degree has never been a guarantee of a good job, you have to match your degree to an open field. It was true when I was a student and it's still true.

Levicy,

And so we ended up with tons of lawyers so everyone and anyone can file a lawsuit but it costs almost as much for an electrician or plumber since there aren't enough... I think their point might have been that people were being told that the trades were not a good career choice so it was automatically assumed that as long as you have a degree you'll be better off. Unfortunately yes many people still picked a degree that doesn't have great job prospects, that masters in medieval English literature is only really useful if you get that job teaching medieval English literature...

#28 But there is really no such thing as ADHD. Do they have a medical test for it? Does it not just boil down to a total lack of discipline?

Phoebe, I suggest you read Driven to Distraction or another informative book on the subject before saying it doesn't exist. Yes, there are cognitive tests for it just as there are for other mental disorders. It's not due to lack of discipline, it's often based in parental neglect and abuse. Put simply young children who aren't properly stimulated develop ADHD.
