Joey,

They are light pillars, I believe... just reflections of the city lights on the ground being reflected by atmospheric particles (ice or water).

Midge,
City lights light up the ice crystals, yes, but it's not the light pollution causing the pillars of light. If you think about it, you'd never see this gorgeous sight without city lights. The picture doesn't do it justice.

Ab,

Nah, it's just a crappy picture of the Aurora Borealis.

Ab,
You're right. They are ice crystals in the air that causes the light to shine like huge pillars of light. It's quite the site to see. Happened where I am a few years back. I was outside late night just staring up at them.
Nothing to do with the aurora borealis. These pillars of light are actually closer to the ground than you'd expect.

#44 I'm guessing she was trying to prank her husband by having him read each item including the f u when ordering her bagel.

I did something similar many years ago for a friend that worked the support line, sometimes having to spell passwords for user over the phone when resetting them. He did not know the phonetic alphabet by hand, so he had a cheat sheet. I replaced some of the real words with less appropriate words. It was hilarious to watch him struggle when he discovered it while on the phone with a customer. JC-LOL
