#22. There’s still lots of open space around the Falls, part of Niagara Parks. I’m local and I still visit a few times a year, lots to see and do.

Joanne, Canadian Side is better. The US side is a big dump.

#9 - Venice, Italy;
Absolutely true, especially if you day-trip. You have to be prepared for itr, and remember that Venice was a tourist town 600 years ago. If you want to get a better feel for it you have to stay over night. The whole vibe changes after the last train leaves in the evening. Still, it is extremely expensive to stay and eat there.

I never visit any touristy places. They are ment to be a disappointment. I rather go for the journey itself. That is far more interesting and one can meet a lot of nice people. So, going by plane to a place is (mostly) not worth it.

Midge,

As negative as this sounds... I live in a tourist city in Alaska and ANYONE that goes to a "famous" destination is obviously gonna have OTHER tourists that also know of its fame. Tourist places make their living off selling extras, making mass food, and having thousands of people each day go through tiny locations. Best option, see what you can while you can and accept anything as an experience even if its not the one you fantisized.

Alot of the photos of tourist attractions are made in the early morning, when most people are still asleep or are photoshoped together without the people.
In lots of these places locals need tourism to live. Can't blame the for advertising it with great pictures.

For me it is: A (US) Tourist complaining about going to tourist places and wondering that he is not the only one and it is expensive. Hey there are 8 Billion People on the globe. You are not special and the only one. This idea to see the world have many other also. And some examples show, the US Spots are even the same. For NIAGARA Falls etc, reading Upfront will protect you from disappointment. Or should we call it education or just Common sense???? ;-)

#3 The Callanque is not known for beautiful beaches, it's part of a French national parc of outstanding natural beauty.

For tourist spots, visit during the shoulder season. Visit early in the morning or late afternoon. Hitting popular spots can be enjoyable - They are popular for a reason after all. Just figure out when the traffic will be less. Food will always be mediocre and over priced in such locations. Know this, and move on.

Also, look into what else is there . E.G. Prague was home to Kepler, Einstein, Dvorak, Doppler, Kafka - visit (the front of) their homes and drink beer at their favorite bars. Mozart premiered Don Giovanni here, etc. Every place has its charms.

I've seen Prague, Versailles, Venice and Antilope Canyon. Though i can confirm some of the places are overcrowded (especially Venice and Versailles), i would recommend a visit.
In Iceland we also skipped the BlueLagoon and we at smaller thermal springs.

"Ha Long Bay in Vietnam was a bit of a letdown. Based on the photos, I was so excited to visit, but there was so much garbage in the water it felt extremely polluted. Our junk ship operators were visibly annoyed with us because we didn't want to buy any of the touristy trinkets they were pressuring us to purchase on board. I’m glad I went and experienced Ha Long Bay, but I wouldn't go back."
