#3 is very common in Scandinavia and some parts of Canada:

If there is 3m snow outside, an upper entrance is very useful.

Blanche, It's a hell of a lot more fun than earthquakes, droughts, mudslides, forest fires, other natural disasters (and wars/civil unrest)! Snow for the win!

Blanche,

I love it, when nature looks like someone poured sugar on it.
Have you ever recognised, how quiet it is outside after a night of snowfall?

Blanche,
It's 'f@#king' not f-ing.
And 3 metres depth, not meters.
Meters are measuring devices, like speedometer or electric meter, while metre is the universal measure - one thousand millimetres or 100 centimetres. And yes, why would anyone live there when halfway to the equator is lovely.
