Rarely do I agree with everything in an Izismile post, but this is one of the times I do. Great examples, IMO.

Chris Evans as Captain America comes to mind. He had played an annoying Human Torch in a terrible Fantastic Four movie prior. No one thought he would become the character so much that it was impossible to re-cast it.
"Anne Hathaway in Les Miserables. I had only seen her in The Princess Diaries, and she seemed like a lightweight for a pretty heavy role. But she ended up being the best actor in the movie and winning the Academy Award. Her version of ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ was amazing."
