#15 On July 23, 2012, A CME missed Earth by 9 days. It was at least akin to the Carrington Event. The damage would have been a bit worse, though.

Rian,

Came to say exactly this. It’s terrifying, and information I wish I didn’t know.
The Sun goes through these cycles every 11 years. We’re in one now.
It’s inevitable that a Carrington level event will happen again, and we are completely unprepared for it.

How can you prepare for that?

Clarence,

The gravitation field of a body weakens as you move further away.

Ursula,

NO! Move away from what? Gravity comes from mass, so the ground itself IS the mass. Not the height from the center of the planet!

Clarence,

Wikipedia: Pendulums are affected by changes in gravitational acceleration, which varies by as much as 0.5% at different locations on Earth, so precision pendulum clocks have to be recalibrated after a move. Even moving a pendulum clock to the top of a tall building can cause it to lose measurable time from the reduction in gravity.

Trying to inform a 12 year old is fruitless.

Nickname,

Wikipedia is whacked. It is not gravitatiknal changea but AIR PRESSURE! True gravitatuinal fluxes are found where magma flows and mangnetic fields alter the density of the mantle under the crust... but none of that has anything to do with HOW HIGH you are while ON THE GROUND.

Randolph,

Asterisks just highlight that a word should have special attention.
For example = F@#k.
